What Not to Do in Dubai

Not that long ago I was sitting with a group of expats in a popular international hotel in Dubai. The first thing they all said to me was “I was always afraid to travel, but now I feel like a cowboy.” They had just come back from their first tour of the city.

They were so impressed with the different side of the trip that they wanted to tell you about it. However, I told them it was very exciting and unique. Their next reaction, “Oh my God, what not to do in Dubai?”

Well, let me tell you a few things you may not want to do if you plan on traveling to Dubai anytime soon. But these things are much more common than you might think. Here is what you should not do in Dubai.

Things you don’t want to do in Dubai

First off, there are so many things to do that I can’t possibly cover them all. I can give you some very short descriptions of what you should not do. These should not be taken as laws but as opinions of my own.

First off, I would avoid anything to do with alcohol. I know that sounds obvious, but alcohol is such a big part of the culture here that I wouldn’t be surprised if someone you knew did something stupid. I think the time to drink is after a long day of work or while you have friends with you.

Secondly, I’m going to let you in on a little secret: If you want to visit Dubai you should probably stay away from smoking. Most people do it, but it’s a very bad idea.

Third, if you’re an illegal immigrant from the Dominican Republic you’re in big trouble in Dubai. You don’t do drugs or drink or go into the desert at night. There is a new law in place, which I’ll discuss in a moment.

Finally, most people wouldn’t want to talk to the police when they’re in Dubai. That’s the last thing you should do in Dubai because you’ll be arrested and held for hours without food or water.
